We'll be honest: some plumbing jobs are genuinely DIY-friendly. Others will cost you twice as much if you try them yourself. Here's how to tell the difference.
Running toilet: Replace the flapper valve. $6 part, 15 minutes, zero risk of making it worse. YouTube it.
Dripping faucet: Replace the cartridge or washers. Turn off the shutoff under the sink first. $10-30 in parts.
Showerhead replacement: Unscrew, apply thread tape, screw on new one. 10 minutes.
Slow bathroom drain: Pull out the stopper, remove the hair clog with a snake or wire. No tools required.
Toilet doesn't flush fully: Adjust the fill valve height or replace the flapper. Both are under $15 at any hardware store.
Replacing a P-trap: Simple in theory, but cross-threading a plastic fitting or getting the slope wrong creates a constant slow leak into your cabinet. Know what you're doing before you start.
Installing a new faucet: Supply lines, shutoff valves, and the drain assembly all need to be right. Doable but one wrong connection causes a cabinet full of water.
Water heater thermostat/element replacement: Must shut off breaker (electric) or gas valve (gas), fully drain the tank. Possible but serious consequences if done wrong on gas units.
Anything involving your main water line. A mistake here floods the house.
Sewer line work. Requires permits in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Unpermitted sewer work creates a huge problem at home sale.
Gas line work. Full stop. No DIY gas work, ever. Licensed plumber only. The stakes are fire or explosion.
Burst pipes in the wall. You could patch the visible section and miss that the freeze caused damage in 3 places.
Water heater installation. Requires permits in most Long Island municipalities. Unpermitted water heater = problem at home sale inspection.
Any time the water won't shut off. If you can't isolate the problem with a shutoff valve, call immediately.
A DIY water heater installation that fails inspection: $200 permit + $300 re-inspection + the cost of the original install anyway.
A DIY pipe repair that causes a slow hidden leak: $50 in materials + $15,000 in mold remediation 18 months later when you finally find it.
On anything involving permits, gas lines, or work inside walls โ the professional cost is the cheaper option when you account for the risk.
