A slow drain is your pipes trying to tell you something. Sometimes it's a simple fix you can do tonight. Sometimes it means a serious backup is coming. Here's how to diagnose yours.
The most common cause of a slow bathroom drain is hair and soap combining into a sludge at the P-trap โ the curved pipe right below the drain. You'll usually see this as a gradual slowdown over weeks.
DIY fix: Remove the drain stopper (usually lifts or unscrews) and use a drain snake or bent wire hanger to pull out the clog. Follow with a boiling water flush.
Cooking grease, fats, and oils solidify inside your drain pipes over time, gradually narrowing the passage. Hot water helps temporarily, but the grease builds back up.
DIY fix: Boiling water + baking soda + vinegar every month. Avoid putting grease down the drain in the future.
Call a plumber if: Kitchen drain is slow even after treatment, or if multiple drains in the kitchen are affected.
Bar soap contains fat that builds up just like cooking grease. Switching to liquid soap reduces this dramatically.
Long Island has moderately hard water. Over years, calcium and magnesium deposits narrow pipe interiors โ particularly in older galvanized pipes. This one gets progressively worse and won't respond to drain cleaners.
Call a plumber: Camera inspection to assess buildup; hydro-jetting if needed; possible pipe replacement if galvanized is severely scaled.
If multiple drains in your home are slow โ especially if you also hear gurgling from toilets when other fixtures run โ you may have tree roots in your main sewer line. This is common in Long Island homes near large trees with older clay sewer pipes.
Signs: Multiple drains slow simultaneously, gurgling sounds, intermittent sewer smell.
Call a plumber immediately: Camera inspection of the main line. If confirmed, hydro-jetting to clear, possibly trenchless repair of pipe sections.
Drain pipes need air to flow properly. If a vent pipe is blocked (leaves, bird nest, ice), drains run slowly and toilets gurgle. This one is hard to DIY safely and usually needs a licensed plumber.
DIY-safe: Single bathroom drain, hair/soap clog, plastic snake can reach it.
Call a plumber: Multiple drains slow, gurgling sounds, sewer smell, or the clog returns within a week of clearing.
